This image depicts a close anterior view of a male patient’s genitalia, revealing the presence of a pustular maculopapular rash that had resulted from a secondary syphilis infection, caused by the bacterium, Treponema pallidum. Note that the multiple lesions were located on the penis and scrotum. Secondary syphilis is the most contagious of all syphilitic stages, and is characterized by a systemic spread of the T. pallidum bacterium.
