This illustration depicts a dorsal view of a “crab louse”, Phthirus pubis, a member of the suborder Anoplura, or “sucking lice”. Being an insect, the crab louse Phthirus pubis, possesses three pairs of jointed legs. The foremost pair of legs is smaller than the other two pairs, as well as being more slender in stature. Its abdominal region is short, and displays “hairy” processes, which extend laterally from the abdominal margin. Known as ”setae”, the “hairs” are really chitinous extensions of the insect’s exoskeletal protein.
