Caption:
This photograph depicts a close view of a patient’s eyes, revealing the presence of a stromal haze in both eyes of this male child, due to his late-staged congenital syphilitic condition called interstitial keratitis (IK), caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. IK, which is an inflammation of the cornea’s connective tissue elements, usually affects both eyes, and can occur as a complication brought on by congenital, or acquired syphilis. IK usually occurs in children older than two years of age.
