Caption:
This image depicts an right anterior-oblique view of a male patient’s torso, highlighting the manifestations of a bacterial infection known as granuloma inguinale, or Donovanosis, which included phimosis, or an abnormal constriction of the prepuce, that had resulted in a penile pyoderma due to a secondary infection of the glans penis. Granuloma inguinale is caused by the Gram-negative bacterium, Klebsiella granulomatis, formerly Calymmatobacterium granulomatis. A sexually transmitted disease, it is a slowly progressive, ulcerative condition of the skin and lymphatics of the genital, and perianal area. A definitive diagnosis is achieved when a tissue smear tests positive for the presence of Donovan bodies.
