This historic 1969 photograph depicted a scene at a Truck Ceremony, which was a way of introducing a fleet of transportation vehicles to the Upper Volta community of Burkina Faso, to be used to transport Smallpox Eradication Program staff throughout the region, to administer smallpox vaccine to local inhabitants. Through the efforts of organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), by the early 1970s, a growing number of nations had reached Zero-Pox. In 1980, the WHO declared the global eradication of smallpox due to a worldwide vaccination campaign. The WHO then recommended that all countries cease vaccination.
