In the background of this photograph of a Maridi, Sudan dirt-road intersection, you’ll notice a number of thatched dwellings representing the Maridi Hospital, which was located in one of the areas in Sudan that was devastated by that region’s 1976 Ebola virus outbreak. The staff of the Maridi Hospital did not properly sterilize their needles, and like the hospital in Yambuku, Zaire, it became a breeding ground for new Ebola cases. In the 1976 Sudan outbreaks, which began in Nzara, there were 284 cases that were recorded with 141 fatalities.
