This 1999 photograph depicted a worker, who was using flames from a torch to assist in the removal of paint, demonstrating an exterior renovation method typically used on residences, where lead-based paint was present. This practice was found to contaminate nearby areas with lead. The University of California, Berkeley, and local members of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America conducted the demonstration. These organizations requested that industrial hygienists at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), conduct a health hazard evaluation in order to assess workers’ lead exposures, inherent in performing various tasks. High levels of airborne, and settled lead dust particulates, were found to be created during this method of paint removal.
