Caption:
Under a magnification of 779X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed the microscopic debris that was attached to the exoskeletal surface of an unidentified insect. These particulates were predominantly vegetative matter, including pollen granules, and disintegrated plant tissues. Also, note the few sensorial hairs, known as setae, which were in the field of view. These setae are not really hairs, but extensions of the exoskeletal exterior, and are composed of the same material, known as chitin.
