Magnified 55x, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed ultrastructural details associated with the head of an unidentified dragonfly including one of its two compound eyes, one of its two antennae, and one of its six jointed leg. Note what appears to be the hollowed-out antenna, the distal end of which had been broken off. When it was alive, this now empty lumen would have been filled with the dragonfly’s blood, which is known as hemolymph, as well as soft tissues including nerves and muscles that had dried up after the organism’s demise.
