This historic 1939 photograph depicted an aerial view of what at that time, was a modern sewage disposal plant, which had been located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Sanitary District, on Pig’s Eye Island, St. Paul, Minnesota. This was one of a series of instructional images used by the Minnesota Board of Health, in order to train the state’s public health workers. The purpose of the images, and the associated training, was focused on seeing to the orderly disposal of waste, including sewage and industrial waste, in order to prevent the contamination of nearby water supplies, including lakes and rivers.
