This historic 1931 photograph depicted some of the equipment used by public health laboratories, in order to analyze water samples. Pictured, were two test tubes containing water samples, that were being tested for the presence of Balantidium coli parasites. The method involved the use of broth culture, and gas formation, to detect B. coli organisms. This was one of a series of instructional images, used by the Minnesota Board of Health to train state public health workers. The purpose of the images, and the associated training, was focused on keeping potable water supplies free of parasites, including B. coli.
