Under a moderately high magnification of 587X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the morphologic features displayed on the exoskeletal surface of an Anopheles dirus mosquito's head region. Included in this view were aspects of the insect's compound eye, revealing the structural subunits known as ommatidia, which when working in unison, will provide the mosquito with a composite view of its environment, much like a mosaic depiction. Also, note the modifications of its exoskeletal scales, and sensorial hairs known as setae, atop its head.
