This transmission electron microscopic (TEM) image reveals human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) particles that had been stained with ruthenium red, in order to show surface glycoprotein knobs. Ruthenium red stains the sugar portions of the surface glycoprotein molecules.
