This historical photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Reprinted from the May, 1951, “Industrial Hygiene Newsletter”, the image depicted the probe attachments to be used in conjunction with an inexpensive airflow measuring device called a velometer. When fitted with probes like these, air samples can be taken in isolated spaces (see PHIL 9489). Velometers measure concentrations of pollutants in the air.
