This historical photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The image depicted the inside of a Milan, Michigan foundry before it was cleaned and painted. The interior was dimly lit, soot covered the floor, and metal product was stacked on wooden palettes. Compare this photo with PHIL 9499, revealing the appearance of the foundry’s interior, after it had been renovated. In industrial settings like this, plant workers can be exposed to potential respiratory health hazards, especially when working in a chemical industry setting.
