This November 1947 photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The image depicted a number of women in an office setting at the Bureau of Internal Revenue, which was later renamed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The purpose of the photograph was to document the effect of improved lighting within the work environment, and workstation comfort, as these women were operating tabulating machines. The most common complaints resulting from poor lighting are eyestrain, eye irritation due to dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches.
