Caption:
This historic 1947 image, provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and obtained from the Nat. Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Photographic Unit, depicted a metallic arm band designed by the NIH, which contained a photosensitive film. Analyzed on a regular basis, this simple device was intended to reveal whether or not the wearer was being subjected to a high level of radioactivity. The higher the levels of radioactivity to which the wearer was exposed would be revealed as the film changed its appearance. See PHL 9586 for a look at the band on a wearer’s wrist.
