Caption:
Men manufacturing lead plates for storage batteries. They men appear to be working with lead paste, to cover lead grids to make plates for the batteries. They work under ventilation hoods that exhaust the process, and they stand on metal grates that allow dried lead debris to fall through and lessen contamination of the factory. However, they are probably exposed to lead dermally, as they are working with their bare hands. The photograph is identified as being part of the U.S. Public Health Service, Industrial Hygiene Division’s Crown Cork and Seal Company file. If so, it was probably made in Baltimore, MD in 1953 as part of a USPHS study.
