National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

New Content and Proposal Guidelines

September 15, 2025

Dear NHANES community,

NHANES relaunched in early 2025 and the first few months of the survey have proven quite challenging. Participant recruitment, in particular, has been difficult. We are concerned that with our regular cycle length of 2 years, we may not be able to produce estimates for population subgroups as expected. Therefore, we have expanded the length of the data collection cycle to include calendar year 2027. Instead of starting a new data collection cycle in 2027, as originally planned, we aim to start a new data collection cycle in 2028, pending approval from our Ethics Review Board and Office of Management and Budget. As such, we will reconsider proposals for a 2028 cycle sometime next year. If you have already submitted a proposal for 2027, you do not need to submit another proposal for 2028. We will contact you early next year to discuss whether you still want to be considered for the next cycle of NHANES. Please reach out to us if you want to make changes to your original proposal. If you have not submitted a proposal, but would still like to, you can submit to us prior to February 13th, 2026. The Proposal Guidelines are available at: 2028-2029 NHANES Proposal Guidelines.

Please submit proposals to: DHANES_PB@cdc.gov
